Today is a very special day. Why? Because I said it is, that’s why!
Last time we gave a reading to catch some guidance on what the entire school year has in store for us but this week we’ll be focusing simply on the week to come!
Seemed fitting that after my last tarot reading I break out my runes and give those a go. Rune reading can be done in many different ways but my methods tonight will be much the same as what you saw last time when I read tarot. Just as then, I’ll be pulling three runes and arranging them in a simple “spread” representing the past, present, and future. Using this we’ll ask the gods, universe, or whatever for some guidance or warning for the week to come.
In my experience, runes are more fickle and temperamental than tarot. Almost stubborn and bratty sometimes but if you can persuade them to work for you they can be quite blunt compared to some Divination methods. My own set of runes is beautifully carved of dark wood and has been with me less than a year which means I’m still working on getting myself properly ‘attuned’ to them or whatever. Divinations is a living and breathing thing so just like a wild animal it needs some coaxing and care before it comes round to be your friend.
Don’t matter really, though. A wild set of runes I’m not proper besties with only makes this whole thing that much more interesting and fun, yeah? Let’s see what awaits us this coming week.
I’m sitting in the empty Divinations classroom and just like last time I’m lit only by the cold pale moonlight slinking in from the windows. I reach into the bag of runes and dig and dig until my hand brushes against the right one. I don’t just think it’s the right one, I feel and know it’s the right one in my heart. I place it in the left-hand position, representing something from the past relevant to our reading.
ᛈ
It’s Perthro, the rune of Destiny.
It typically alludes to something left to random chance and is sometimes called the “gambler’s rune” but can represent our literal destiny or some unknown or mystery that stands in the way of our destiny too. Reckon it’s beckoning us to look at the mysteries and unknowns of our past but what does it mean and how does it fit?
Let’s try to find some context in the next runes, shall we? Once again I search until I’ve found the right rune and place it to the right of the last.
ᛏ
Tiwaz, the rune of justice or victory.
It’s the point of a warrior’s arrowhead and can represent victory but often not without a hard fought battle first. Could be we’re fighting our own battles right now or feeling that pride of a recently earned victory?
Let’s see what the last rune has in store for us. I find it rather quickly this time and place it to the right of the others. Our future rune. What we can expect or what to be wary of.
ᚦ
Bloody hell it’s Thor’s hammer, Thurisaz.
It’s a rune that typically represents motion or change but can be a defensive rune too. Think of the “swinging of the hammer” or something like that. But that hammer might be swinging against you, rather than for you. Can be defensive or destructive, depending. Sometimes it does represent a giant or troll or something instead of Thor’s hammer. Big monster or whatever standing in your way.
More plainly it’s all about conflict, danger, change, and all that. Doesn’t have to be all bad though. Conflict is a necessary part of life and can sometimes lead to a brighter future. Without conflict and change we’d all still be banging sticks together in a cave or something.
So let’s put this all together.
I believe the perthro rune is pointing to either some great unknown from our past or times we’ve taken chances for better or worse. Seems according to Tiwaz these chances have paid off and we came out victorious and on top and all that but Thurisaz is warning us that if we’re not careful we might be facing our downfall. Thurisaz representing defence and all that sounds like a warning to keep your guard up too though. Could be all of the above too: Don’t be afraid to face change or conflict but keep your guard up while doing it.
Sensible, if a bit ominous
