Welcome to Weekly Portents, your one and only source for all things prophetic!
In Weekly Portents I, the one and only Riven Redwhisper, will be giving a special reading to let you know what to expect at Hogwarts in the coming days, weeks, months, and beyond! But that’s not all, dear reader! The cards tell me you should expect much much more in the future including personal readings to answer questions you’ve submitted, tips and tricks to improve your own Divinations game, and I even have an interview lined up with a real live seer! Yes, I know it’s been months since I first promised all these things but rest assured, they WILL happen! Eventually!
What are the Sooths saying? What are the Oracles orating? What are the augers articulating? Check in each week to find out!
10/3/2029
Hello and welcome, once again, to another exciting, enchanting, and entertaining expedition through the ever ethereal fog of that which has yet to be!
I took last week off but Nora stepped up and gave us a bit of insight with the arithmantic compatibility of Mr Hyland and Miss Hurley. Shame that the numbers aren’t in the lovebirds’ favour but who knows, maybe they’ll find some way to defy the odds!
Ha, “lovebirds” because they’re both eagles. I get it now.
Right then. Enough blathering on about the past, it’s time to face our future! Well, not my future necessarily and not yours either unless you’re one of the lucky badgers or lions who get to face off this Saturday on the pitch. That’s right, today we’re asking the powers of the almighty cosmos itself to provide some insight into the little broomstick brawl that is this weekend’s Quidditch match! Hufflepuff v Gryffindor!!
Who do the heavens favour in this match?
What should the players be wary of?
Who shall stand and who shall fall!?
To find out we’ll be doing something very special. Augury! What’s augury, you say? Well, I’m glad you asked, dear reader!
Augury comes from ancient Rome and is a practice of watching birds and interpreting their flight patterns to get a glimpse into the future. But besides Ravenclaw being the coolest and most bloody awesome team in the school, what do birds have to do with Quidditch? Absolutely nothing!
That’s why I’m doing things a bit differently. Instead of watching birds I’m interpreting the flight patterns of something else.
Bludgers!
That’s right, augury via bludger! They fly about on their own so why can’t we interpret their flight patterns same as we can with birds?
I’ve set them loose and now I’m sitting on my broom hovering out on the pitch, watching and waiting. Had to get a bit creative to be able to write all this down, read my little augury guidebook, and stay afloat on a broom all at once but I’ll leave the details to your imagination.
What am I seeing?
Well, they’re flying in circles right now, looking for something to smash. Oh! They just did a little swirly spiral dance sort of thing with one another then broke off and now they’re flying toward different ends of the pitch. But wait, now they’re flying at each other again, nearly smashing together as they whiz past one another. Now one’s climbing up and up and up while the other one’s turned and is flying toward…
Oh…
Right, completely unrelated to that last bit but now I’m sitting in the grass watching them from below. Much more comfortable down here and easier to read and write and all that at once, innit.
Seems like the bludgers are keeping on how they have been. Dancing with one another then breaking off. Climbing then falling. The little guidebook says this behaviour represents “an imminent change or reversal of fortunes” or perhaps someone “falling off their pedestal” or a “loss of status or disappointment.”
Guess that’s a lot of vagueness but think I see where it’s going. Sort of.
With Gryffindor being 1-0 and Hufflepuff being 0-1 this could be telling us to expect a “reversal of fortunes” by the badgers winning this one. Figure that’s a bit too simple and straightforward though. Maybe there’s an over-reliance on certain hotshot star players on one of the teams and it’s a warning about being disappointed in them. Though it could be a bit more figurative and it’s not a person falling off the pedestal but rather dated tactics which are no longer effective.
So brace for disappointment or don’t, depending who the message is referring to. Keep your head clear and keep your expectations or bias on a short leash or else you may find yourself falling from that pedestal.
Ta-ta for now, darling reader! Until we meet again in, you guessed it, the future!!
