The Prefects of Gryffindor
There are four Prefects in Gryffindor this year. Their names are Evan Adams, Jamie Koslarevic, Aures Truegarden, and Elusive Prefect That I Could Not Find To Interview, whose name we will shorten to Elusive Prefect. As all of my interviews had mostly the same questions, I am organizing all of the interviews in one place by question. I met with the Prefects in different places: in the Common Room, in the Great Hall, and in the null space of an event not happening. Originally, I was not supposed to do these interviews, because I am a Gryffindor and these are Gryffindor Prefects. But ((the word ‘Nora’ is scratched out)) the publisher of the Owl Post got desperate so here I am.
What is your name and where are you from?
Evan Adams is a Seventh Year. He is from Bristol.
Jamie Koslarevic is a Sixth Year. They were born in a place called Slani vjetar. That is not in the UK at all. It is in Croatia on an island called Žut. They do not make suits there. They are a Wizarding community. But they did not stay there for long, and grew up in Portsmouth. Two and a half years ago they moved to Little Lamplight.
Aures Marrow is a Fifth Year. She is Welsh! She grew up on the coast of the Isle of Anglesey near Holyhead, on the western coast of Wales, not far from Gwynedd. She grew up in a lighthouse that her Dad built for her mother. She speaks Welsh!
Elusive Prefect is from that void between being asleep and being awake, where you might catch sight of him but might not. He did not give me a direct answer because I could not find him.
What sort of household did you grow up in? What do your parents do?
Evan grew up in a Wizarding home. His mother is a pastry chef and his father is a baker. They have a shop in Diagon Alley. Apparently there is a difference between a baker and a pastry chef. I was confused too.
Jamie grew up with a Muggle mother and a Wizard father. Their father works for the Ministry with magical creatures. Their mother does Muggle things for a Muggle business. Somehow an environment is involved, and also the Muggle moving pictures. But sometimes my English is not very good and I do not understand everything. She builds things.
Aures’s Dad is a musician, and is a Wizard. Her mother is a Veela, and does not really work. She grows herbs and plants. However, her Dad is not actually her Father. Her Father is English, and runs a shop in Knockturn Alley.
Elusive Prefect sprang fully-grown from the Nothing, and disappeared back into the Nothing before he could answer any direct questions. At least, this is my story.
Did you want to be a Prefect? Or was being chosen a surprise?
Evan did not answer this question because I forgot to ask him. Actually, I did not think to ask this question until the second interview. Sorry, Evan. I suppose we may never know if he really wanted to be a Prefect or not. Maybe you can ask him. He might like that.
For a long time, Jamie did not want to be a Prefect. Last year they were asked and they said no. But this year life was better and they talked with friends and other Prefects about it. And so they said yes when the badge came. Still, they were surprised, even though they had been hoping for it.
Aures never wanted to be a Prefect, because it always seemed like a lot of work. However, she wanted to be a knight, and she sees being a Prefect as very much like being a knight: a Prefect protects their housemates and enforces the rules, and the rules in Gryffindor are somewhat knightly in their own way. Apparently Professor Moore even stated in her rules to obey the Knight’s Code. However, the letter came as a surprise.
Elusive Prefect’s answer must remain a great mystery, but my guess is that he wanted to be a Prefect very badly. This is my story, anyway. Unlike with Evan, though, nobody can really ask him about it because he almost does not exist unless you go into the Void of Nothing to find him.
What is your favourite class at Hogwarts?
Evan’s favourite class is Care of Magical Creatures.
Jamie has many favourite classes: Ghoul Studies, Divination and Charms, and maybe more. It sounds like perhaps all the classes are their favourite classes except for the classes they do not like, but I did not ask which classes they did not like because then Professors might get mad at seeing that in the Owl Post and then they would give me detention. Or Jamie.
Aures’s favourite class is Music, but she also likes Defence Against the Dark Arts, so that is a close second.
Elusive Prefect’s favourite class must remain an unknown because he winked out of existence before I could ask him this question, retreating into his Void in spacetime. Maybe his favourite class is Herbology. It is my favourite class, so it can be his as well.
What do you want to be when you graduate from Hogwarts?
Evan wants to work in his parents’ shop as a baker or as a pastry chef. If there is a difference. But he did not say which one anyway. The reason he likes Care of Magical Creatures is that he wants to eat the creatures, not study them. He is curious how they taste.
Jamie is not really sure what they want to do yet, but there are a number of ideas, including DMLE and DRCMC in the Spirit Division and many more.
Aures is also not really sure, but used to want to be a Magizoologist or an Auror.
Elusive Prefect will not grow up in the standard sense. He will forever exist at the boundary of fantasy and reality. But if he were to grow up, perhaps he would be a good Auror. Nobody would be able to find him unless he wants them to.
What is your favourite colour?
Evan says it is red. So it is good that he is a Gryffindor. Otherwise that would be strange.
Jamie likes black. They wear a lot of black. But they also like red and purple.
Aures likes a powder blue. But of course she is not a Ravenclaw.
Elusive Prefect does not have a favourite colour. He exists in a shapeless, colourless Void and only winks briefly into existence on occasion. He does not exist long enough in his brief stays in reality to develop a taste for a favorite color. But because despite his nonreality, he is a Gryffindor, we will say red.
What is your favourite thing to do outside of class (extracurricular activities)?
Evan really likes baking. But he might not be the right person to ask for a biscuit. He does not like sweets very much. He likes other kinds of bread and he likes meat. Like magical creature meat. So perhaps he will make you baked faerie, if that is tasty. Perhaps he knows.
Jamie likes to spend time with Riven and with friends. They also like to draw and to kick boxes. I did not realize this was a thing people do for fun. Maybe it is an English thing. I forgot to ask where they get the boxes to kick. Jamie also likes to talk to the portraits and to the respirationally challenged at Hogwarts, and is learning how to bake. Maybe that means we can have a baked faerie contest with the Prefects.
Aures loves to play her violin, and to play with her band. She likes to read also. She likes trying new things, so perhaps she can learn to bake as well and join the Gryffindor Prefects’ Baked Faerie Contest.
Elusive Prefect failed to answer this question altogether, so there is no way to know if he will be part of the Gryffindor Prefects’ Baked Faerie Contest. The best we can say is ‘maybe.’ He will have to wink more fully into existence first.
What do you like most about Hogwarts?
Evan says he likes the food best. Sometimes. But only sometimes. He did not say anything more.
Jamie likes that one meets so many people here who are different. They like meeting people from different cultures who do not all think and act the same way.
Aures like everything about Hogwarts. She thinks of Hogwarts as home. Every hallway is a memory and has a story to tell. Every little place is safe (she used the word ‘cilfach’ which in English is either a creek or something called a ‘nook,’ but she meant a small comfortable place). And she likes that Hogwarts is very big.
Elusive Prefect expressed no opinions on this, because I was unable to ask him before he winked out of existence once more. But I think we will say that he likes existing, and he gets to do that at Hogwarts. So perhaps that is his favorite part about Hogwarts. And the food.
What do you not like so much about Hogwarts?
Evan is concerned about the many events on campus that can result in student deaths, such as incidents with the dragon, the basilisk, the trinkets and things that came close to causing great harm and perhaps death, and the pumpkins. He was concerned that the response from the school authorities was mostly to tell us all not to die.
Jamie does not like people who think they are better than other people because of how they were born. They do not like it when Purebloods say they are better than non-purebloods, as an example.
Aures says she does not like that we do not have a lot of freedom. We are kept in the castle a lot, and she wants to see more of the world, and not just the stone walls of Hogwarts.
Elusive Prefect was of course unable to express an opinion on this question, but I am guessing that he would say that he does not like bullying, and hates that it happens at Hogwarts. Or maybe he would say the food.
Do you have a pet?
Evan has a small barn owl named ‘Loaf.’ Maybe this is because of how he looks, and not because he will end up in a loaf someday.
Jamie has a turtle at home called Crush, and has a toad here at Hogwarts named Frank.
Aures has a part-Kneazle cat. Bobby Billings, the Head Girl, got it for her in Diagon Alley over the summer.
Elusive Prefect exists in a spacetime Void. If he had a pet, it would only exist for even briefer moments than he does. However, that pet might be a small part of the Void that he brings with him, made into a nonbeing by the name of George. Maybe it is a Dementor named George.
Do you like being a Prefect? What do you think of detentions?
Being a Prefect has ups and downs. I do not think he was talking about the stairs here, or the hills outside the castle. Or maybe he was, and he was talking about patrols. He likes detentions if they teach someone a lesson. Otherwise they are useless.
Jamie likes working with other houses, and likes being useful for the school. They do not like to yell at housemates and friends, and hopes that Gryffindors will stay out of trouble. But they understand this is more a dream rather than a likelihood. They are not a fan of giving detentions, but will do so if they need to.
Aures likes being a Prefect, but does not like detentions. She has not given a detention out yet. She also likes that she feels useful as a Prefect. However, she does not know a lot about detentions. She only ever had one, and the Prefect made her cry. So she does not like them.
Elusive Prefect did not say whether he liked being a Prefect. He did not have enough time to answer any questions before winking out of existence once more. However, because he only is able to be here occasionally, and must otherwise live in his Void, I am guessing that he likes giving out detentions a lot, and that he likes being a Prefect because it gives him existence.
Is there anything you want to say to the students of Hogwarts?
Evan wants to tell everyone to practice their spells. That will get you far. So remember to practice.
Jamie thinks we all need to make friends here, good grades or bad grades. And to the First Years, they say that it is important for everyone to take their time.
Aures was pretty tired by the time I got to this question.
Elusive Prefect is unable to say anything specific to the students of Hogwarts. But he might say to everyone to enjoy existence here at Hogwarts. It is better than the alternative. He should know. He is back in his Void now. With George.
