Last Hogsmeade Weekend, students at Hogwarts descended upon the town expecting to enjoy the first outing of the spring now that the snow had properly melted. As the day went on, nobody suspected that a species not seen in decades would make a startling appearance! A Dementor appeared along the main street of Hogsmeade! Apparently it could sense the dread and despair of Ravenclaws specifically, because it descended upon them! What on earth is going on in that house!? Wasn’t it a Ravenclaw who got held at knife point back in January? Do they just attract danger? I would have placed bets on Gryffindor rather than Ravenclaw.
Anyhow, I myself was witness to the attacks. It was very cold and demoralizing. There were four total direct victims of the dementor with head boy Eric Hyland getting up close and personal trying to protect the younger years. What a hero! A member of the Spirit Division who was by the scene came and chased off the Dementor with a Patronus spell! Three of the victims collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital wing for chocolate stat! Victims include Caralia Lane, Kimmy Ianda, Charlotte Holbrook and everyone’s favorite dragon fodder- Arthur Letsworth. I suppose now he’s dementor fodder?
I caught up with the two initial victims Lane and Ianda and asked them questions about their encounter with the dementor! You can read the interview beneath the article. For now, however, I will be doing the professors a favor and list things you should not do when confronted with a dementor!
- Don’t punch it. Don’t try to punch it. Don’t even think about punching it.
- Don’t throw glitter at it. Just don’t!
- Don’t spit fire at it! Fire doesn’t hurt dementors!
What you should do when confronted with a dementor is as follows!
- Run!
- Contact the DRCMC!
Now a lot of students have been moaning about wanting to learn the spell Patronus to defend themselves against dementors, particularly one Lrthur Aetsworth. Yes, the one who tried to punch a dementor. However, this Owl Post writer asks the question: Do you really think you lot who can barely keep your emotions in check on a normal day will be able to keep calm and actually draw out the emotion needed for patronus when faced with a dementor? Let’s be real! Half of you can’t even handle being rejected on a date or not invited to a party.
With that, let’s get to the interview with dementor victims Lane and Ianda!
JR: “So, what were you two doing before the Dementor showed up?”
CL: “Well we left for Hogsmeade with everyone on the morning, visited the bookshop cause i wanted to find a special leaflet about potions… we went down the street and then we spotted Eric Hyland who was sitting in a bench, you know just looking around, and we chatted with him for a moment, before we’d go grab some lunch, and we invited him to join us for a bite, we were about to return to the 3b’s when it happened.”
KI: “yes, we were about to leave for the tavern when I felt a very cold wind coming from behind and when I turned around it was already very close. I guess I was closest to it before I made a jump back— ohh I am so sorry! If I had not jumped away you would have been safer”
JR: “Did either of you see where the dementor came from? How quickly did it show up?- You said from behind, but where is ‘behind’?”
CL: “It was snowing so the air was cold anyway, but suddenly it really felt like someone cast a freezing charm around us. All of a sudden, I turned my head down the station and it was there staring at me. I remember Eric yelled at us to run, but I got grabbed and hit by the dementor attack just then, it had been like a matter of seconds between the moment I saw it and the moment I got attacked. I remember Eric tried to pull me away, and I really tried to run away but it was too late already.”
KI: “The really creepy thing was…my friend Cara was drawn close to the Dementor. It was really horrible. Then I thought – I should run to the tavern and search for help. I really ran as fast as I could.”
JR: “Er- it… drew her close? What do ya mean? Er- what did being near it feel like… and how did it feel when it did the…er- whooshy thing?”
CL: “I felt… literally frozen in place, unable to move, to defend myself… and then it was like i was grabbed as it came closer, I was pulled closer even though it didn’t really gripped my arm or anything and frozen inside, like… feeling sadness overpower any warm joyful feeling as they were draining out… I heard shouts and voices, like shrieks, yells… I can’t tell if it was from people in the street or due to the attack… The words may not be strong enough but it was like being frozen, sad and empty all at once with no hopes of it to stop. That’s when i collapsed i think, i don’t remember much after”
KI: “She was drawn to the Dementor. I started running and right after the hill, where the cobblestone road through Hogsmead makes a little bend, I met a lady who would later turn out to be a ministry witch. I called out to her that a dementor was attacking students and she immediately came with me. Really such an experienced witch. She casted a nonverbal patronus and first distracted the Dementor away from Caralia and then made it flee.”
JR: “Right… So what happened after the dementor left? How long did it take both of you to feel back to normal or better?”
CL: “I think i was unconscious for a couple minutes, after i fell down i was told Eric took me away to a nearby bench and he went to help others, i think two younger student also got hit, Lottie and Arthur. The dementor was being chased in the bushes when I regained consciousness. I’m not sure how long it took but I remained cold, tired and exhausted, for a long time. i slept overnight in the hospital under the nurses survey”
KI: “I wasn’t really attacked, I just felt a strong desperation. but that’s normal from the situation I think? Ohh yes and then there was little Timmy from Gryffindor! She is so clever and offered Caralia some chocolate, which really seemed to help her”.
JR: “Alright! Last question. Are you two feeling better?”
CL: “I’m doing fine, still a bit shaken. I’d say, it’s not every day you get to find a dementor on your path to lunch… I recovered well enough to resume my studies and that’s the most important, and I will always keep some chocolate on me. I know I was really lucky the dementor released his grip on me before it went too bad, and I was extremely lucky my housemates reacted so quickly”.
KI: “I’m just incredibly happy that everything went well and also insanely proud to have such great schoolmates. And I badly miss the butterbeer we couldn’t drink anymore.”
So there you have it folks, if you see a dementor- RUN!
