Welcome to Weekly Portents, your one and only source for all things prophetic!
In Weekly Portents I, the one and only Riven Redwhisper, will be giving a special reading to let you know what to expect at Hogwarts in the coming days, weeks, months, and beyond! But that’s not all, dear reader! The cards tell me you should expect much much more in the future including personal readings to answer questions you’ve submitted, tips and tricks to improve your own Divinations game, and I even have an interview lined up with a real live seer! Yes, I know it’s been months since I first promised all these things but rest assured, they WILL happen! Eventually!
What are the Sooths saying? What are the Oracles orating? What are the augers articulating? Check in each week to find out!

Welcome once again to Thursday at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy! Today we will be taking yet another dive into the great unknown that is our future!
Last week we asked for some guidance for the long year ahead of us and were advised that good times are in store as long as we keep our wits about us. Guess that’s always good advice though, not like anyone ever said “best thing to do here is act like a bloody git” so stay smart and you will prosper!
Anyway, what are we doing today? Divinations probably.
Dunno why but my gut says runes and who am I to question the whims handed to me by the powers of the almighty universe? Once more I’m using my primeval set of wooden runes said to be older than time itself and think I’ll be using the four rune “compass” spread for our reading today. We’ll just be asking for some general guidance on the week ahead so let’s get on with it, shall we?
This works a bit like the three tarot card spread I’ve done so many times in the past for this article. We lay a rune at four points on the “compass” which represent different things. Nordri, or North, represents something from the past which is relevant to our reading. Vestri is west and represents something in the present. Austri is east and shows us obstacles we may face on our way to Sudri, south, which is our potential outcome.
So I reach into the velvet bag and just let my hand rest upon the runes until I find the one because, again, who am I to question the gut feelings handed to me by the universe? I gently place the rune in the north/past position and turn it over.
ᚲ
Kenaz: the torch or flame. It can mean that we’re revealing things which were hidden in the darkness or maybe using the light to find our way. In this position we might take it to mean that we should use our past as a guiding light as we move toward the future.
I pull another rune and place it to the west. The present.
ᚢ
Uruz: the aurochs or ox. This rune represents strength and endurance or perhaps energy and vitality. Whether this rune is telling us we have strength or need it is hard to say just yet.
The next rune, our obstacles.
ᛈ
Perthro: the destiny rune. Can sometimes represent fortunes or fate but could also be representing pure chance or randomness as well. This being the obstacle could mean that random chance is standing in our way or could mean that being tied down by our “destiny” is the problem.
And on to our last rune, the outcome.
ᚾ
Nauthiz: represents our needs. This could be our literal physical needs like food, water, shelter, and all that or could be the emotional needs we all neglect sometimes, especially during exam season.
What does it all mean?
Right, so I think we’re being told that we should look to our past to guide us. Reflect on it and don’t be afraid to lean on those memories and experiences to help us make decisions in the now. Uruz is trying to tell us that we might feel strong now but don’t let that perceived strength rule us. Don’t let it get away from us or let it get to our head because raw strength alone won’t protect us from the factors of random chance that might throw us off course. Balance is key here. Use that strength as a tool but don’t let it own us because our physical and emotional needs are what’s at stake.
Will you be a physically and emotionally ruined mess of a person or happy and healthy as can be? Unfortunately I’m not a god, merely a messenger, so it’s up to you to heed my warnings and take from it what you will.
Anyway, that’s all for this week, dear reader! Stay warm and safe and we’ll talk again next week for another moderately exciting edition of Weekly Portents!
