Dear Editor of the Owl Post,
There has been a lot of talk this year about unity; I don’t know if everyone has noticed it, but I have. At the opening feast when the sorting hat warned us, “With so many different houses, This hat has a word of advice, Though separate, we should unite as one, Or be herded in a trap for mice.” I have been trying to encourage everyone that I talk to to think about and work towards this goal of uniting for this very reason. Not just within their respective houses but also with other houses. It seems to be working. For the most part.
Unity, by its most basic definition, says that it is the state of being united or joined as a whole. I’ve seen lately different ways of students, and professors, coming together to show the Ministry what exactly unity means. No longer are students wearing their respective house ties, mysteriously these four coloured ties have appeared and just as quickly many, myself included, have taken to wearing them. Professors have started assigning homework to be done as partners together. They have also encouraged students to look around and make friends outside of their houses. I believe one professor said “we need to reach out because you might need help from another student one day.”
Unity is also found in the little things. Like meal times. It’s becoming a common occurrence to seen houses intermixed at the tables. No longer are we bound just by one color: the red, yellow, blue, or green of our respective houses. Instead, we are bound together as one school.
One Hogwarts.
It is time to show the world what we are; not the trouble making urchins that they believe us to be. Instead, let’s show them the best side of Hogwarts. The side that I have grown to love and call home. United we can show the board of governors that our ties are strong as ever. If you struggle in a subject, seek out a tutor or even better, ask the professor for some help. Most of them seem to be willing to help us. If one student is misbehaving, don’t take it into your own hands. Instead, report it to a professor, prefect, or the Head Girl. United we can stand…but divided Hogwarts will fall.
Unity. We need it.
