Decorating on a Budget

Not all of the students at Hogwarts have the pocket money to be buying fancy decorations or parents that wish to send them some. This article is for those students with not a lot of pocket money but limitless pockets of holiday cheer.

First and easiest of the cheap decorations is one we all did when little, Paper. Simple things like folded paper stars or clipping paper to make snowflakes or even making a paper chain. Paper is definitely the simplest and cheapest of the budget decorating ideas. We recommend trying the colour change spell on your paper to bring a bit more cheer with your paper art.

Another good one for cheap decorating is sticks. Popsicle stick houses, stick stars tied together at the points, wreaths made from branches you found outside all of these things are simple decorations you can do yourself to help bring holiday cheer. You can count on the items for these to be so cheap you might say they are just lying on the ground. Of course if you want to make your stick art more bright we suggest trying the fire making charm with the flame freezing spell. For a glow that comes from within your art.

One more idea we have is those old clothes you have laying around. Clothes can be strung into garlands easily enough, or if you have a ton of old socks, string those on a thread or rope, or simply wrap some old boxes with the cloth to make pretty presents. As far as magic goes on this one a good way to lock the cloth into place would be to dampen it then cast a freezing charm on it or if you’d like a bit more movement try a softening charm to make it a bit more flowy.

Our last idea is only for older students, plants can be found easily enough and while your dorm might not have the space for a Christmas tree, have you thought of a small desktop sized one. Simply move a plant that won’t be missed into a nice little pot and use the plant change spell to turn it into a small Christmas tree. This will leave you plenty of space but still give you that tree you may crave for your space.
