My favourite thing about the Christmas holidays is…
My gran makes homemade mince pies every year and sends me a bunch. She’s a seeleeack though, so in every letter every year she says ‘I hope they’re okay as I can’t try them to test them’
- Leonora Clements, 4th year Hufflepuff
The fact that we all take time to spend it together. And my grandmother’s Česnica. The Česnica is a Serbo-croatian tradition. It’s a Christmas cake and you put in a coin and whoever gets the piece with the coin is said to have good luck in the coming year. My grandma has the best recipe for that cake and it’s always a bit of of a mess when the whole family just falls in on that poor cake to find the coin.

My favourite part about the holidays are…my Grandpa’s Latkes and Sufganiyot, and my nan’s Christmas fudge and ham…..
- Arthur Letsworth, 2nd year Gryffindor
I love being able to do nice things for people, even though I try to most of the year. Also love the smell of the kitchen after a day of baking. Oh! Don’t forget the hope of a holiday wish come true!
- Lynessa O’Connor, 4th year Ravenclaw
Being able to spend time with family both biological and those who are chosen. Food is freely made and given to everyone who comes into my family’s home. Be prepared to gain a stone or two if you visit!
- Essa Nazari, 7th year Ravenclaw
I love the traditional trip with my parents to the symphony when I get off the train in London. I also sometimes get to visit my grandparents and extended family in Senegal, and that’s always wonderful. Whether we’re in a baobab grove in the Sahel or up north at a desert oasis, the warmth, the smells and the tastes are always a nice respite from British winter.
- Emily Neutron, 7th year Ravenclaw
I have vivid dreams about the Aurora Borealis and I used to have dreams about Santa Clause around winter. I guess I’m saying I love the strange magic of it. The fire, the snowfall, the strange stillness of the earth. It’s like everything is holding its breath! Oh, also fuzzy jumpers and socks, and that feeling of coming inside and drinking hot chocolate after playing out in the cold all day.
- Everlina Kindred, 2nd Year Hufflepuff
Favourite part about the holidays? The fact that we get to go home, duh. Though, I guess not this year.. It really sucks, honestly. What else, uhh.. Maybe the food. The food’s pretty neat. And the snow! I throw snowballs at people when they aren’t looking. It’s really fun to watch them get angry!
- Aloy Osiris, 4th Year Gryffindor
My mum takes me to Diagon Alley and tells me to pick anything I want (except a gold cauldron because she got me one in first year and I used it in a race down the stairs and accidentally broke it, so she had it melted down for earrings for herself and a watch for my uncle)
My dad also sends me a letter and lists loads of cool stuff he’s done, but he’s really busy and only managed to do it twice, and now he’s SUPER busy in a very secret and important role in the ministry, so for sure he won’t, but maybe he will because we bonded last year.
- Tom Morgan, 4th Year Hufflepuff
My favourite things would be the most obvious to those that know me. Getting into the kitchens and making all the special treats that people only seem to make this time of the year. The heady scent of gingerbread, the cranberries that fill your senses with their sweet scent. Cookies and cakes and fudges and all sorts of sweets. Everything just seems extra special this time of year. And going in and making them with family or friends you love just makes it all the more special. It creates fun memories to cherish all your life and traditions to take on to your own family when you grow up and have one. If it’s just a family of you and your pets.
- Marigold Feathersweet , 4th year Hufflepuff
My favourite thing about Christmas is being with friends and family. Also, to surprise those who are less fortunate with items they might need for the holidays.
- Aiden Knight, 4th year Slytherin
My favourite thing about the holidays is Christmas Eve night. Mother and Da let me sleep on the couch that night, because one day I am going to catch Father Christmas in action! But that’s not the good part. The good part is before you fall asleep, when the tree’s all decorated with baubles and the candles are all lit, with charms so the whole house doesn’t burn down, and the room just feels warm and you can see all the presents and there’s hot chocolate and a roaring fire and it’s just… A different kind of magic than being a witch. It’s like fairy tales. That’s the best part, that’s my favourite thing.
- Aures Truegarden, 2nd year Gryffindor
My favourite thing about the holiday season is getting all of the chocolate frogs that I can eat! The care package will include a six months supply of lip gloss and nail polish. And, I love to go ice skating. To be honest, the very best part of it all is being able to hangout with my family and my friends!
- Kitten Ducan, 4th Year Ravenclaw
My favourite thing about the holiday season is being with others. I love to see the look on everyone’s faces as they get presents and see all the decorations.
- Venus Norwood, 1st Year Gryffindor
My favourite thing about Christmas is seeing my family. Every Christmas all of my father’s family goes to my grandparent’s house to celebrate the holiday together. It’s the only time of the year I get to see my cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.
