Dark Arts Mint Chocolate Trifle
If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if a potions lesson collided with a Great Hall bake-off, look no further. Today I bring you one of the most chaotic, mint-infused, chocolate splattered misadventures to ever be layered inside a trifle dish: The Dark Arts Mint Chocolate Trifle.
Let me set the scene, you start the day with ambition; had the recipe bookmarked, apron ready, yet you foolishly had the confidence to try something new without thinking you would mess up at least once…. That confidence lasted approximately six minutes.
Everything seemed simple enough. Heavy Cream, Powdered Sugar, Peppermint Extract, a touch of green gel food colouring. But nobody warns you that one drop gives you a charming pale mint aesthetic… and well ten drops transform your bowl into the neon glow from the dungeon corridors. Still you persisted, you grab the piping bag, attach the start tip, and begin to fill it gracefully… Until the piping bag puffed up like a Quidditch Bludger and detonated whipped cream upward in a glorious magical geyser. Lesson learned. Moderation is key and always think ahead, or recheck the labels.
Ingredients:
- 1 box of Dark Chocolate Cake Mix (Or Make it Homemade)
- Eggs
- Oil
- Water
- 2 ½ Cups Heavy Cream
- ¼ Cup Powdered Sugar
- 1 ¼ tsp Peppermint Extract
- Green Gel Food Coloring
- 1 Cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Edible Silver Glitter
- Fresh Mint
- Crushed Chocolate Biscuits
Directions:
- Preparing the Dark Chocolate Cake:
- Bake the dark chocolate cake according to the package instructions. Or follow the instructions to your own homemade recipe.
- Let it cool completely, then cut it into small cubes.
- Making the Mint Whipped Cream:
- In a large bowl, whip 2 cups heavy cream, ¼ cup powdered sugar, and 1 tsp peppermint extract until stiff peaks form.
- Add green food coloring if desired and mix until evenly colored.
- Creating the Mint Chocolate Ganache:
- Heat ½ cup heavy cream in a saucepan until simmering (do not boil).
- Pour over chocolate chips, let sit for 1 minute, then stir until smooth.
- Mix in ¼ tsp peppermint extract and green food coloring. Let cool slightly before layering.
Next thing you know… you’re lying sideways on the couch, watching your favourite interhouse drama. humming “Green House Pride,” and contemplating applying to Slytherin based on the number of questionable life choices you’ve made in the past hour.
- Assembling the Trifle:
- In a clear glass trifle dish, start with a layer of chocolate cake cubes. (This is where my cake cubes crumbled like a stressed out first year in their first Potions Exam.)
- Add a layer of mint whipped cream, then drizzle mint chocolate ganache on top.
- Repeat until the dish is full, finishing with a drizzle of ganache and decorative toppings.
Additional Notes:
- You will want to make the cake ahead of time. If you are pressed for time, I would create the cake and its layers 6 hours prior to when you need it.
- Optional substitutions are available for Vegan or Gluten Free Options.
- Baking is part performance, part disaster, part snack-break.
- Embrace the crumbs, the spills, the questionable emerald stains, and the “I swear I only ate one bite” lies. I am pretty sure I ate enough whipped mint cream to fill my stomach for 4 days.
- There may or may not be glowing green whipped cream on the ceiling of the 7th Year Girls Dormitory in Gryffindor..
