“Wit Beyond Measure is Man’s Greatest Treasure.” That’s what’s written at the base of Rowena Ravenclaw’s statue in the common room. Rowena was one of the four original Hogwarts Founders. She didn’t care about blood status or courage or ambition, she cared about the power of the mind! She wanted students who were eager to learn and use their brain power to pursue their passions.
Some famous Ravenclaws you may have heard of include Laverne de Montmorency – the inventor of love potions, Ignatia Wildsmith – the inventor of floo powder, Guilderoy Lockhart, an author and former Hogwarts professor, Sybill Trelawney – a famous Divinations Professor, Garrick Ollivander of the famous wand-making family, and that ghost girl who moans in the second floor girls’ restroom!
If you were sorted into Ravenclaw, you know that our beloved ghost, The Grey Lady, is actually Helena Ravenclaw, Rowena’s daughter. There’s quite a story there!
If you were sorted into Ravenclaw, you’ll have to solve new riddles everyday just to get in and out of the common room. (Or you end up spending the night on the tower stairs!)
If you were sorted into Ravenclaw, you’ll hear a lot about two birds, the raven and the eagle! Although both make a variety of sounds in the wild, around Hogwarts and at Quidditch games you’ll hear a lot of “Caw Caw” and “SCREEEEE!”
If you were sorted into Ravenclaw, you can look up at the ceiling in the common room and watch the stars at night.
If you were sorted into Ravenclaw, you might walk around the castle with your nose in a book, and no one would think it was weird.
If you were sorted into Ravenclaw, you’d know that we make the strongest flock and take care of one another.
Last year I got to interview our current Head Girl, Imogen Paige. When I asked her what being a Ravenclaw meant to her, she said, “Being a Ravenclaw isn’t always about being the smartest one or the one with the quickest wit. It’s about being you, and embracing who you are with all of the creativity and wits and wisdom that you have but also embracing all of those things that others pour into you.” I think Immy captured the essence of being a Ravenclaw perfectly.
Respectfully submitted,
Primrose Fiddlefern, fourth year Ravenclaw
