“You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil.”
Welcome to the House Hufflepuff!
So you got sorted into House Hufflepuff and you do not know what to expect. First thing you should do if you aren’t too sure what we are about, just look up next time you eat lunch. You will see the banners of the Badger in black and gold (Black and Yellow! Black and Yellow!). As Professor Lane prophetically stated at last year’s Sorting Ceremony, “I, for one, have no problem bowing to our Badger overlords”. Winners of the House Cup 2024-2025.
House Cups aside, in this reporter’s unbiased opinion, House Hufflepuff is the best House for a nervous first year to be Sorted into. Why? Would you rather spend your first night in two high towers, or a dungeon or a warm cozy burrow furnished with chairs and table of honey coloured wood. Hungry during the night? No problem. We, Badgers, are right next to the kitchens for a late night snack.
Everyone gets nervous when attending a new school and we magical folk are no different. As per our reputation, We Hufflepuff are the most welcoming House. Every Badger is always willing to help the new students to gain their footing in the strange new hallways of the ever-twisting Hogwarts. This extends past Hogwarts as our house produces the fewest dark wizards. A claim unchallenged since the beginning of our historic school.
Feeling like when you received your acceptance letter to Hogwarts, you bit off a bit more than you can chew? Not to worry. Helga Hufflepuff famously said, “I’ll teach the lot, and treat them just the same” This is not to mean that Helga wanted the leftover students after Godric, Regina, and Salazar had their picks (Who said they got first pick anyway?). This was to mean that Helga wanted her House to treat all her students equally and more importantly, fairly. If you felt in your prior schools, there was a social ladder needed to be climbed. Fear not, there are no ladders in our House. Just pedestals.
With our centuries long history, you will sit at the same tables as other famous witches and wizards from House Hufflepuff. First of all, Hengist of Woodcroft! The very founder of the Three Broomsticks. Once you go on your first trip to Hogsmeade, you will see that this is significant. The very social center of the village and the only place to get a decent butterbeer. Secondly, Bridget Wenlock, a famous thirteenth-century English witch and Arithmancer. The first witch to come up with the magical properties of the number seven. Artemisia Lufkin, Minister of Magic and the first female to hold the office and of course Newton Scamander, famed magizoologist and Author of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Being Sorted into our House, you will walk the same steps as these famed individuals.
So in closing, The Sorting Hat paced you in House Hufflepuff for a very good reason. In your heart, the Hat saw, justice, loyalty, kindness, fair play and above all, a willingness to work hard. If these traits aren’t the traits of a good and decent person, I do not know what is.
