Welcome to this school year’s first installment of the Hogwarts Spotlight, a glorious feature dedicated to showcasing different students throughout the school! Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Maddison Paige MacKenzie. She does go by Maddi and is quick to stress that it is “Maddi with an ‘i’ not a ‘y’ or ‘ie.’” She is a Fifth Year Gryffindor, and her hometown is Inverness, Scotland!
Godric Gryffindor sought students who had great strength in courage, as well as daring, nerve and chivalry. When asked why she felt the Sorting Hat placed her in Gryffindor, Maddi confesses that she has no idea and that she was a hat stall. When pressed further about the characteristics she has that could potentially shed insight into the Sorting Hat’s decision, she shares, “I guess I’ve been able to show the house traits when it comes to exploring and helping not just our first years but all the first years.” Chivalrous, indeed. Nonetheless, she thought she was going to be sorted into the house of the Eagles, owing to the fact that she is considered a bit of a nerd (by her friend Hana), is always on top of her schoolwork and loves to “[…] write and draw and learn.” All things considered Maddi certainly would have been a testament to the Ravenclaws. Perhaps, in another life.
When asked about her favourite class, Maddi has quite a few but if she must select one it would be Defense Against the Dark Arts. She appreciates how challenging the course is and “getting to learn how to defend ourselves against different creatures in our world.” Despite only being a fifth year, she has put some consideration into her plans upon graduation — either joining the DMLE to follow in her mother’s footsteps or becoming a magizoologist. The prospect of the latter she finds “kinda exciting too.”
As for what Maddi enjoys doing when she’s not in class or doing schoolwork? Well, if you’re looking for her, she is very likely exploring the castle and spending time with her friends. In her own words, “this castle is full of secrets, after all.” Fair point. Her favorite memories so far have been meeting her best friend, Hana, on the first train ride. For a moment, she reflects on how different her time at Hogwarts would have been without her. Her second favorite memory is the sorting, and her third memory is facing the boggart in DADA. And here we have those infamous Gryffindor qualities coming out, “It sounds weird but it was fun getting to face my deepest fear.”
For the rapid fire questioning part of the interview, Maddi shares that Apple Crumb is her favourite ice cream from Fortescues and Chocolate Frogs are her favourite sweet from Honeydukes. Her Scottish pride shines brightly when asked what her favourite professional quidditch team is, “It has to be the Montrose Magpies. Always for the home teams.”
Studious, kind, chivalrous with a good appreciation for adventures, and you have the makings of Maddi MacKenzie. If you happen to see her around the Castle and are keen on a bit of adventure, I reckon she would let you join on her current exploration. Tune in… in about a fortnight, when I employ my sly and cunning to convince a Hufflepuff to sit down and interview with me!
