Welcome to this week’s installment of the Hogwarts Spotlight, a feature dedicated to showcasing different students throughout the school! Typically, we try and conduct the interviews one on one with our classmates; however, I simply sent this student the form questions via owl because my disposition is far too delicate. Perhaps, I should have removed the questions I already knew the answer to like her name [she pointed out that the owl was addressed to her and I’m a moron for asking]. Back to the article! This week we shine the spotlight on the infamous Rita Grey.
Grey is a seventh year, and upon further review of her responses to my questions, I ought to have removed the form question regarding what house she is in, “Slytherin which for you could not be obvious because, again, I so happen to be in your house. Are you deaf? Blind? It makes sense why the Owl Post is so terrible.” The Slytherin’s hometown is London, and her answer is accompanied with a fair warning, “I know who reads these papers but if you did happen to stumble upon my home, I can certainly say you might not make it back.”
Salazar valued students with ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, intellect and determination. When asked why thinks she was sorted into Slytherin, her answer is simple, “I don’t think, that’s the difference. I know. I know I belong to my house because I proved myself.” This is where the article normally details what a secondary house option would be for the student; however, Grey is adamant that such a thing should not be considered as it would never happen. She explains how if a wizard or witch picked a wand that did not choose them, then it would not work properly. This analogy draws a parallel to a student being placed in a house they are not meant for. She does add, “Although, the sorting hat is a bit daft sometimes with the choices it picks. Faults caused by Godric Gryffindor I suspect.”
Grey’s favourite class was once Defense Against the Dark Arts, when Headmaster Fox taught it. Now, she considers transfiguration to be her favourite, as she is, “quite fascinated with evanesco.” One can only wonder what she has been vanishing that has warranted such a fascination. With only a couple months left for her at Hogwarts, she acknowledges that she has known for some time what her plans are after graduation. Ever the Slytherin, she is evasive and refuses to detail what exactly they are. When Grey is not lurking in the depths of the dungeons or in class, she likes to get away. Understandable, of course. Until she continues, “[…] from the fools that roam these halls. Get rid of those fools.” The next question was what her favourite memory thus far at Hogwarts has been. Instead of providing a summation with short quotes, I shall copy her exact words: “During Dorchester’s time here. Everyone was whining about their food. Crying when they could have bettered themselves. They could have seen that Dorchester brought opportunity, to all of us and I took it. She was sent to Azkaban? Why? I don’t see a reason for it.”
For the rapid fire questioning part of the interview, Grey refuses to share what her favourite ice cream flavour from Foretescues is. The non answer is mildly confusing, until her response to what her favourite sweet from Honeydukes is, “What? So you can poison those too?” As for her favourite professional quidditch team, it is the Vratsa Vultures.
Paranoid, dark, yet ambitious and goal-oriented are part of the components that make up Rita Grey. If you should ever encounter her in the hallway, those faint of heart should perhaps run the other way. Tune in next week, when Imogen Featherstone spotlights one of her fellow housemates!
