Let’s face it, everyone has questions that they are embarrassed to ask. Or you believe that you are alone in dealing with a situation. This is not true. Fickle Firsties is are the questions that you want to ask but aren’t sure how to.
What is the best kind of pet for a firstie?
-Is it cats?
Making a decision about what type of pet you own is a very personal decision. There are several options and for our last article of Fickle Firsties for the year I thought that we could look at each of them, their strengths and weaknesses. Now, please remember that it really boils down to what is best for you.
So, the pets that are allowed here at Hogwarts are: owls, cats, toads, rats, and Pygmy puffs. Each creature has its own positives and negatives. You might even say that none of the allowed pets are for you. Just…don’t get a wild hair and try to steal a creature from CoMC. (Bad things happen, remember the missing silverware?)
Owls. Probably one of the most useful pets here at Hogwarts particularly for those who come from magical households. They serve as the primary way of sending post, which means if you own one that is a cost saving measure for you and your family. They do not stay in your dorms, which means less mess for you to have to clean up later. However, that means you do need to go by the owlery to check and make sure they are in good health. Owls are predators so all other pets are in danger of being dinner.
Cats. Cats are the perfect pet for the witch or wizard to go. They are self sufficient and only demands two things from their subjects-food and a clean litter box. They can either stay in the dorms or be allowed to roam the castle. Some cats like you to hang out with them and provide an extra heat source in the cold winter months. However, you must be aware that cats are predators so if your roommates have a rat, toad, or pygmy puff you might want to think twice about a cat.
Toads. I’m honestly not sure why people would want a toad as a pet. They are slimy and gross. However, we do have a toad choir so they seem to have some magical talent.
Rats. They are the quietest of all of the pet options and are fairly easy to care for. Contrary to popular belief, they are super clean, smart and empathetic. If you need an animal buddy who will show some sort of empathy and compassion if you are in a funk, a rat might be the best pick for you. Rats also make life long bonds with their owners. They are easy to carry around the school and a quick stash for class if you are giving them a walk between classes. However, people are afraid of rats and many see them as rodents so they get pretty much a bad rap. Personally, I’m up in the air about them.
Pygmy Puffs. Probably one of the favorite pets of the school for a wide variety of reasons. They come in all colors of the rainbow and are handy to practice transfiguration spells upon as well (please don’t). They are easy to feed, groom, and carry around. Pygmy puffs eat boogers while you sleep so it is actually a very good relationship between student and their pets. You can fluff up their naturally fluffy fur. And, like the rat, they are very portable. They sing when they are happy or feel like you need to be cheered up. According to some students they are next to impossible to kill, which is also a huge plus. HOWEVER, this is probably the biggest concern, is there is a flu that can come from the pygmy puffs. This is the only downside to owning a pygmy puff.
Dear Fickle Firstie readers.
Congratulations. You have successfully survived and thrived your first term at Hogwarts. We at the Owl Post have noticed that you are having fewer and fewer questions for the Fickle Firstie article so we are going to put this article on the shelf until next year. We, at the Owl Post, thank you for your reading and submission of questions.
Until next Autumn, remember that practice makes perfect and you will get better.
Your former Firstie
