Let’s face it, everyone has questions that they are embarrassed to ask. Or you believe that you are alone in dealing with a situation. This is not true. Fickle Firsties is are the questions that you want to ask but aren’t sure how to.
I think I’m going to get a T in potions. Pretty sure burning a hole in the cauldron isn’t supposed to happen if you do it right. Is there something I’m missing? Maybe I should get a tutor or something. How do you ask for one of those? I’m too shy to just go up to people when I’m bad at things.
Dear Potion Problems,
Welcome to the club of burning a hole in the cauldron, exploding the cauldron, or just generally destroying the cauldron in some form or fashion. There are many proud members of this club both past and present, yours truly included. Honestly, I thought I was about to die my second year when I had perfectly brewed my potion for my exam only to have my robe sleeve catch on the handle and there it went onto the floor. A Troll grade on my final marks for the year. I wanted to die. I went and begged the potions professor and the exam proctor for a second chance but to no avail. The Troll mark remained on my record. Was it my fault? No. But I learned from it. Why am I sharing this with you? It’s cause we, as students, often forget this simple fact. We are students! We are bound to mess up. To not be perfect. To epically (and sometimes hysterically) fail. Now, allow me to say this as well. There is no shame in asking for a tutor. I’ve approached someone to help me this year because I can already see how potions and I are not going to get along this year. The best way for a first year to ask for a tutor is either A.) as your potions professor (this is probably the best way because they know who is truly skilled at potions and who is just bragging to impress someone. OR! B.) talk to your housemates. I know several of the houses have set up either a mentor program OR a tutoring program if not both. Ask around. But don’t forget, you are learning and that’s all that really matters.
I hope this helps and happy explosions,
A Former Firstie
