Welcome to this week’s installment of the Hogwarts Spotlight, a feature dedicated to showcasing different students and professors throughout the school! Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Kari Maeve Fraser, a first year from Hufflepuff whose hometown can be found in the outskirts of Dublin!
The traits Helga Hufflepuff valued most are hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty and fair play. While her mom and the majority of her family are Slytherins, Kari has gone against the grain and convinced the Sorting Hat to place her in the house of Badgers! When asked what she feels makes her fit in with her house, she shares, “[…] I feel like my love for all magical creatures is a way bigger part of who I am. Even if I can’t save all of them, if I can just work hard enough to help right ONE wrong I think it will make a difference. Huffles are all about fair play and hard work right? I think that’s why I fit in this house.” As for any other house she could possibly be placed it, it would be with the snakes not simply because of her family, but rather because she is a bit of a perfectionist.
Regarding Kari’s favourite class, there is no doubt that it is Care of Magical Creatures. Her mom is a huge proponent for the protection of all magical creatures, and this is something that truly resonates with the firstie. One might not be surprised to learn that even at her young age, she already has career aspirations to be magiczoologist.
When Kari’s not in class, she spends most of her time learning how to navigate the castle, “I’ve gotten lost a few times since I don’t have the sun and moss to guide me like I would in a forest.” As for her favorite memory? “[…] definitely my 1st potions class! Which is odd because I hate potions, i’m so bad at it! But we were learning to clean the cauldrons with soap and lemons when I tipped over my cauldron and dirty lemon water got all over my fellow Huffle Samuel! He was nice about it, helped me clean it all up and then afterwards let me call him Lemon Head for the rest of the night! That was the day I really felt like the huffle house wasn’t just a dorm but becoming a home too.”
For the rapid fire questioning part of the interview, Kari tells us her favourite professional Quidditch team is the Ballycastle Bats. Her favourite sweet from Honeydukes is certainly the salt water taffy’s, and her favourite ice cream flavour from Fortescue’s is chocolate raspberry, “You get the deliciousness that is chocolate but the extra umph of tartness from the raspberry. So good!”
While Kari’s first name is Swedish, her middle name is “Maeve” which is Irish and means “the cause of great joy,” and that certainly is fitting for her! Be sure to say hi to her in the corridors, and if you need an ice breaker — ask her about magical creatures! Tune in next week, when Imogen Featherstone interviews a student from the house of the brave!
