Welcome to another installment of the Hogwarts Spotlight, a feature dedicated to showcasing different students, professors and clubs throughout the school! For this piece, we have had the opportunity to sit down with Lia Valentina Swahn, a sixth year Ravenclaw who was born in Gothenburg, Sweden and raised right outside of Livingston, Scotland!
Ravenclaws. Are they not the bookish types? It would not surprise you then that this reporter was able to track down Lia in the library, indulging herself in a cup of tea. After she pokes fun of the question of what her name is, she shares what makes her fit with the house of the Eagles. Ever the Ravenclaw, her answer is delivered in a matter-of-fact tone, though her response leaves room for more questions than it answered. “It’s difficult for someone to say /why/ they fit into their house. You usually regard yourself differently than how other people see you, and more often you simply like to think the best of yourself. If I had to choose though, I’d hope it’s because of my creative mind, and creative minds think together.” Although she has difficulty in seeing herself in any other house, it appears Slytherin could perhaps be a viable option for her. “If I had to, it would be Slytherin. A lot of the snakes I know are driven and smart, perhaps it is sometimes for reasons I wouldn’t agree with, but smart nonetheless.”
Delving into Lia’s time at Hogwarts, we queried her on her favorite class and with no hesitation she is quick to name Transfiguration. “There isn’t really a subject I enjoy more. I think it’s the challenge of it, how you really have to stretch your boundaries, to understand the law of magic and to know exactly what you’re capable of. It’s very rewarding.” One does wonder if it has more to do with the instructor teaching the subject, as she appeared quite knowledgeable on Professor Mordus’ hometown in Sweden that incidentally is not too far from where she was born. Idle musings aside, upon graduation, she hopes to perhaps start her own business or something more charitable. “’I’m very interested in magical creatures, some more than others. A few of these I know for a fact are near extinct, or at least very difficult to come by, and I would like to preserve what little wonders we have in the world.”
Often times the best things in life are stumbled upon, and for Lia two of those moments were meeting Adam Fletcher and Persephone Vitrac — though she acknowledges that it does sound a bit cliche. Pressed to name her favourite memory thus far at Hogwarts, she divulges, “We had the brilliant idea of a bet. We would race each other across the banister of the bridge, you know, the one leading across the viaduct? Well, as both me and Adam are quite competitive, both used a freezing charm on each other at the same time. It of course ended up with us both, frozen solid in the cold, having to wait for someone to pass that could remove the spell.” Unsurprisingly, when not in class, she does enjoy spending her spare time in the library. She is quick to acknowledge the importance of not getting lost in your ambition and spending quality time with friends, “Sometimes you just need to relax, and I can’t see a better way than with the people I care about.”
For the rapid fire questioning part of the interview, Lia gushes about Fortescue’s Licorice Blast, “It’s a licorice-lemon curd ice cream, topped with white chocolate,” and licorice wands and chocolate frogs from Honeydukes. As for her favuorite Quidditch team, she does appear to have a soft spot for a former Professor as her favorite one is apparently “The Giggly Gant” that Bellingham once played for. She seemed rather enthused at the prospect of watching such a team compete… any day.
Intelligence, wit and creativity then paired with a strong sense of individualism, and you have the qualities of a quintessential Ravenclaw but perhaps more importantly a Lia Swahn. Don’t hesitate to say hi to her in the corridors, though if you’re a bit dim – she will run a few circles around you. Tune in next week, when we shine the Hogwarts Spotlight on a Slytherin!
