Welcome to another instalment of the Hogwarts Spotlight, a feature dedicated to showcasing different students, professors and clubs throughout the school! For this piece, we have had the opportunity to sit down with Jayden Isaiah Lukas, a third year Gryffindor whose hometown is Kyle of Lochalsh in Scotland!
The words bravery, daring, nerve and chivalry come to mind as characteristics favoured by those in Gryffindor, and Jayden does indeed exemplify these traits. From his perspective, he explains what makes the house of the Lions the perfect fit for him, “I am loyal and very protective of others in particular those who cannot defend themselves. I am not afraid to take on someone who is bullying my friends. I would do whatever I can to stand up for my friends and my housemates. They are my family or I should say pride and I would always hope that I make them proud of me.” While he is certainly a proud Gryffindor, students often embody other characteristics valued by the founders of other houses. When asked if he had to be sorted into another house, he is quick to point out Ravenclaw. “My mum was in Ravenclaw. I am studious and work hard at doing well in my studies. I do love doing research and reading.”
The question that did give him pause was what his favourite class is. After careful consideration, he lists Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Magical Theory, Herbology and Ancient Runes. The reason why? “I like being challenged and to really push myself. I even made my own set of runes as part of our winter project.” With such a vast array of subjects he enjoys, it is curious what he plans to do upon graduation. “I would like to be an Auror. I want to bring those who would break the law to justice. I like the idea of investigating and solving crimes.”
When Jayden is not in class, he enjoys quidditch, duelling practice, theatre, homework and sleep. He does add after he lists what he likes to do that they are “Not necessarily in that order all the time.” Our years spent in Hogwarts is a time when some of our favourite memories will be made. Some of his are, “Meeting my first best friend, Raven Stormborn, on the way to Hogwarts for the first time. Also I think meeting Zero and Cassie for the first time. Zero was like a big brother to me. He and Cassie were two of the first friends I made. Even if they are both gone now I still write them from time to time. Oh and another favourite memory was beating Eric Hyland last year in our division in the Dueling competition. I had trained hard for that and well it was a sweet victory until this year when I beat my housemate, Charlotte Merle, in a duelling contest. I have many good memories really.”
For the rapid fire questioning part of the interview, Jayden shares that his favourite ice cream flavour from Foretescues is peanut butter and chocolate and his favourite professional quidditch team is a toss up between Puddlemere United and the Montrose Magpies. As Co-Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team and all the training they do, he does watch his sweet intake, but occasionally enjoys crystallised pineapple and liquorice wands.
Brave with a strong sense of justice and loyalty and high aspirations for the future, don’t hesitate to say hi to Jayden next time you see him in the hallway! Tune in next week, when we shine the Hogwarts Spotlight on a Hufflepuff!
