Anonymous Wolf #2
“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.”
-John Donne, ‘For whom the bell tolls’ 1940.
You may ask why I opened with a poem. The answers we seek are within the history before us. We share this world as a whole and as that whole, we benefit many. We should learn from the past and look towards the future. The wizarding world shields itself from muggles alike due to things they cannot know or understand under the statue of secrecy that was proclaimed in 1689 and took three years to be established officially. We fear those who are not like us as we fear extinction. The witch trials were those who claimed and those who were not burned at the stake. One of these famous witches, as we have learned in our history class, was Wendelin the Weird. She used the flame-freezing charm to make sure the flames did not burn her. As witches and wizards, we hid from those in our own world from a society who does not accept, who do not understand us. Is this not a similar standing on how these same people treat others in this new community who are not witches or wizards?
We have gone through history on what makes a beast and what makes a being. During the trials and errors to determine this we have come to the conclusion that “any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws”. I am pretty sure we can all justify that a werewolf in human form has the ability to uphold this. Acceptance is the first key to this society. If we ostracize them from society just because of what they become because they are sick one night a month. That will indeed change a person when they are in being form.
Lycanthropy is a sickness that is hard to control yes. Wolfsbane was created to help those with this sickness to cope that once a month. A very disgusting potion that has to be swallowed for an entire week. Expensive? yes. Hard to make? of course. The challenge of what happens if it cannot be obtained is indeed a common one. Some werewolves come from other werewolf communities because they do indeed exist as they end up finding one another one way or another. Some take on the responsibilities in being form to protect other beings when they are in beast form. Some of the werewolf communities have these places secured and tucked away hidden to do so. Why persecute them all for the doings of one when they are not themselves? Take the time to talk to them when they are in human form to see if they have needs that need to be met to help them because maybe they weren’t so lucky to have a safe place to go.
I will admit not all werewolves are full of rainbows and sunshine that want to protect the community. Some may have been ostracized to a point where they disdained hatred towards those who created the hate towards them. Open your hearts just for a moment and ask the true questions you want to be answered.
I too am a werewolf inside this school. If you thought this may have been recent? You are wrong. I have gone to school amongst the general population even when we had no other werewolves in this school for a short bit. I have been this beast each month for the past almost three years. Have I ever hurt any other students or bite them? No. What danger have I posed to you then?
This goes out to the one who wrote a letter to the other werewolf. You are a cold human being to think that we should have just taken the easy way out of this life by giving up on it the moment we were bitten. The strength it takes each month just to survive each time we turn is more strength you will ever amount to in a lifetime. We endure the pain and tears just so we can try and live another month. If you ask me, we do die. We die once a month a little more inside knowing we cannot look at a full moon and admire it but have hate for it and hate for ourselves. Most of us do not ask for this life and have to get past the fact of hatred of ourselves but it only makes it even harder when others hate us as well. It’s a lonely life but you are only given one life, and any life should be made worth living infected with lycanthropy or not. You think you live in fear? We are the ones who do live in fear of being hated not just one day of the month but for everyday of our lives when we only spend one day of the month in this sickness.
Ask yourselves who the real beast is in this story when we just wish to attend school, get through it and maybe one day there is a cure that will be found. Be apart of the solution, not the problem. Learn from our history to make a better future.
