It’s the most wonderful time of the year to be a student at Hogwarts. From tree decorating to snowball fights and sending candy grams to your friends, what could possibly be better? The only thing that comes to my mind is the winter ball. With less than a week to get your ball looks complete, Jin and I have put together some of our best advice.
For the Ladies:
Balls can be a bit tricky. No matter your blood status, dress robes are simply beautiful gowns. It is not always easy to find the perfect gown. The best place to start is to think about the theme of the ball. You could choose some wintery colors like red, blue, white, or green. You could also do what I am doing and chose a color that makes you stand out. The most important tip when choosing a dress is to pick something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
The attire doesn’t end with a gown, we also have shoes, hair, and jewelry to think about. If you are not much of a shopper or are feeling overwhelmed, stop for a moment and take a deep breath. It helps to take a friend along to give you advice, and add to the fun.
Accessories only enhance your style. Shoes can be simple, you could find a nice pair of flats or even a small heel. When choosing a shoe, the best place to start is picking a color that complements the tones in your gown. Hair can be somewhat of a challenge. All of us have different cuts, shapes and textures. The best thing to do is visit your favorite stylist in the Hogsmeade village. They can help give you the perfect elegant look. To top everything off, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, or that’s what they say in the muggle world. Look for jewelry that shines as bright as your personality.
The most important tip of all is have a blast. Although the ball requires a lot of effort, remember that the purpose is to have fun. No matter what you chose to wear, have the time of your life.
For the Gentlemen:
From the gentlemen’s perspective on what to wear to the Winter Ball, they have a more ‘simpler’ prospects when it comes to fashion. They have the leisure of dawning a traditional suit and tie, paired with some sleek dress shoes as well. Here is a tip that can add some colour to their looks, try adding their house colours somewhere on the ensemble. Be it in the tie or some additional accessory to really make their look stand out Or, those who are taking a date to the Ball might want to match and come to show off their work they did. Talk beforehand about a possible colour scheme and see if there are any boutonnière or a pocket square that would fit..well in the pocket.
But, let’s step away from the traditional muggle go-tos and step inside the more Wizard World’s fashion. For Witches and Wizards alike, a Dress Robe is something almost always seen at formal events. So, instead of wearing the dress jacket, throw on a Dress Robe and impress those ladies or gents at the Ball. Again, play with the colours when it comes to a Dress Robe, they do not need to always be set in a neutral coluor palette. Try adventuring out with some brighter colours, once again, those who have dates might want to try and match whoever they are taking.
Apart from the major components that make up a gentleman’s formal outfit for a special occasion. Accessories can make or break a look. It was already stated in an earlier part of this article that matching boutonnière or a pocket square would be a nice accent to a look. How about playing up different shapes of ties, from knot or bowed, different ties can invoke different reactions from those around. If this is even doable, look for small embellishments that could be added to an already completed look. This will only improve the look even further for you gentlemen. Look for things like fascinators on the tips of collars, mayhaps. Footwear is often forgotten as, well, it is rarely seen or noticed. Just make sure that the shoe goes with whatever look is chosen.
If traditional isn’t an option, and someone might want to venture out for something extremely different. Look for cultural attire from the vast countries we call home. Celts, or people from Northeastern Europe region may want to wear their formal kilts to the Winter Ball, which would really make for an impactful look. Looking at traditional looks from our homes might spark an idea on what to wear for you gentlemen instead of the usual suit and tie.
Whatever is chosen to be worn to the Winter Ball, make sure it fits properly and looks nice. As this is the time to impress others and have a great time at the party. The Winter Ball is meant to be a joyous event to celebrate the end of the year, the upcoming Holiday festivities and reward those who have worked hard through the first term. For this one night, as the snow falls to the ground, just remember that what someone is wearing may not be remembered. But what happened that night and how it was enjoyed will be.
Remember there is still a dresscode that needs to be followed.
If you wear a low-cut dress be sure to find a nice applier or shawl to cover cleavage.
Heels are allowed for fourth year and above but cannot be platform or stiletto.
Mid/Medium feet are allowed, High are not.
