The Hogwarts Spotlight is a new feature dedicated to showcasing different students, professors and clubs throughout the school. For our first piece, we had the opportunity to sit down with Imogen Featherstone, a sixth year Gryffindor whose hometown is Cornwall, England.
Often times Gryffindors are stereotyped by their bravery, Gen, as her friends call her, is certainly a testament to her house. She shares that, “I am am not afraid to stand up for injustice or things that I feel strongly about, showing my courage. I am also somewhat of a daredevil but, ironically I am also a girly girl.” When asked if she were to be sorted into another house, she is quick to say Ravenclaw, as she is quite serious about her studies. Cheekily, she adds, “[O]r Hufflepuff, because their commons are near the kitchen and I LOVE food.”
Perhaps, Gen’s most telling characteristic is her compassionate nature, which became evident when she reveals that her favorite class is Care of Magical Creatures. Her passion for all creatures also falls in line with her career aspirations. While in the near future she hopes to become more involved in school, after graduation she would like an apprenticeship with a creature caregiver and later in the future travel the world to discover new species. Another possible career choice would be becoming a veterinarian, which is essentially a muggle animal caregiver. She reveals, “My parents have gotten to the point that it no longer surprises them when I bring an animal home to nurse back to health.”
Gen’s recent fond memory at Hogwarts is the all girl sleepover she attended with her house. Courtesy of the house elves, they had an assortment of snacks like cake, tea, caramel apples, a taco bar and pizza. However, for her all time favorite memory, “[A] secret lion tradition that I can’t divulge on.” Alas, despite this writer’s attempt to gather more information, she would not disclose anything further. Regarding her favorite things to do at school, she is quick to say spend time with friends and eat, while confessing her love of reading. When asked about her favorite book, “I would have to say The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is a great read and you really connect with the emotions of the main character Jay.” [For those who have not read the book, Jay is the protagonist who is most Slytherin in nature and who employs cunning and ambition to become wealthy. His contrast in characteristics comes when the reader later learns the tragic beauty behind his motivations, which is that his entire life is devoted to the simple hope that through his machinations his greatest love would happen back into his life. Depth to character, indeed.]
For the rapid fire questioning part, Gen reveals her favorite ice cream flavor from Fortescues is lemon, her favorite sweet from Honeydukes is Bolandi’s Exquisite Crystallised Pineapple, and her favorite professional Quidditch team is the English Nationals. As for her secret power, “I would say making people smile. I always carry around snacks and food makes people happy. Also, I am cheeky about 80% of the time.”
Bubbly, vivacious, compassionate and kind, be sure to say hi to Gen next time you see her! Tune in next week, when we shine the Hogwarts Spotlight on a Hufflepuff next!
