Obliviate will be one of the trickiest charms you may come across, improperly used it can cause brain damage leading to full memory loss or poor memory retrieval. The Ministry of Magic endeavours to heavily regulate the use of obliviate so that it is not abused. The spell is not one taught amongst schools, a good job too if you think how many love-sick teenagers would spell away their heart break.
Following NEWTs (Five required, primarily Charms, Muggle Studies and Transfiguration) you would commence intense training on the correct use of the obliviate charm.
Muggle studies is of vital importance as all memory charms are used on muggles that have intentionally or unintentionally viewed magic. In the past people have taken situations into their own hands when emergency has called for it (read up on the Ilfracome Incident).
We get in, we memory wipe and we leave.
In some cases we work with the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad which is where Tranfiguration skills really come into play.
An old rumour that regularly flies around Schools is that Obliviators work alongside wizarding break ups, removing the memories of muggles who had previously been partnered with witches or wizards. I have never quite seen the point of this because if any muggle shot their mouth off about magic they’d be laughed at.
Another rumour is that obliviators who retire have the memory of how to perform obliviate removed, another thing I don’t see the point of
